A remote desktop connection allows you to use any computer or device to remotely connect to and control your USC work computer. Once you connect remotely, you will have access to all the files, folders, and programs on your work computer; just as if you were sitting at your work space.

How to Remote Desktop to my machine
At Work
If you are at USC, and on a wired connection or the Secure Wireless, you don’t have to be connected to the VPN. You DO have to connect to the VPN if you are using the Guest Wireless.
At Home
You must be connected to the VPN to use remote desktop from home. For instructions on how to connect to the VPN: click here.
How to remote desktop your Windows Desktop
- Click on the Windows button in the lower left corner of your screen, and type “cmd” without the quotes. Select “Command Prompt”.
- Open on the Command Prompt icon.
- Type ipconfig in the CMD box, then press the Enter key. This will look different from computer to computer. You are looking for the IPV4 address under the section labeled “Ethernet Adapter”.
How to remote to your Computer with One Monitor
- Click the Windows icon on the lower left corner of your screen, type “remote desktop” without the quotes, then select Remote Desktop Connection.
- In the “Computer” box, type in your IP Address.
- Your username is “capsd\username” without the quotes, where username is the username you use to log in to your work computer. This is usually your first initial full last name, all one word. Please note that if you forget to type capsd\ before your username, remote desktop will not work!
- Enter your Password that you used to logon your computer.
How to remote to your Computer with Multiple Monitors
- Open Remote Desktop Connection, Click Show Options.
- Click the “Display” tab at the top of the remote desktop window, check the box labeled “Use all my monitors for the remote session”. Go back to the “General” tab, type in your password and click Connect button.
- This will connect you with all of your home computer’s available monitors.
When you’re finished using the Remote Desktop, be sure to log off. Do NOT shut down your computer! You will not be able to connect to it if it is turned off!
